Beware of Scammers

Email hacking is becoming more prominent with $2.2 million being reported lost from scams in the first nine months of this year, this is up from $246,000 for the same period last year.

Hackers are altering the invoices of companies and sending them out to their clients. If you receive an invoice with a notification of new account details, we urge you to contact the company’s registered office and confirm it is legitimate.  The NZ Herald has reported cases this week including a man sending $35,000 to the company that was building his house, only it went to an offshore account. Real estate agents and lawyers have also been targeted.

It is recommended that companies put a warning in their contracts about scams, forewarn your clients that this could happen and for them to query any changes to invoices.
